Jasmine Kiyomi Roe-Bose is an emerging Canadian photographer and multidisciplinary artist based between locations in Melbourne, Victoria and Northeast Tasmania. Kiyomi’s work focuses on themes revolving around the ocean and the fantastical, taking advantage of different mediums to add touches of whimsy or etherealness, effortlessly weaving together and overlapping to highlight nature’s “little wonders”.

Born in the coastal city of St. John’s, Newfoundland along the Atlantic Ocean’s Avalon Peninsula, Kiyomi grew up surrounded by culture and community centred around an oceanic environment.
Becoming even more encapsulated by the ocean at the age of four following her father's purchase of a Contessa 26

sailing yacht, Kiyomi spent several weeks each summer sailing around the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador to uniquely named coves, harbours and fishing villages.

Kiyomi has explored creating art using a wide variety of disciplines and techniques, and gathers inspiration for her practice from a multitude of subjects and themes; nature, wildlife, the ocean, fantasy, video games, speculative fiction and a contemporary, generational perspective.

Additionally, the presence of strong maritime and marine viewpoints in her life have further influenced the direction of her work; her father is a naval engineer and internationally-respected researcher, while her late godfather was a world-renowned whale researcher and ocean conservationist.

Currently undertaking a Master of Fine Arts at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), Kiyomi completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours at the University of Tasmania (UTAS) in 2020.

Curating her first solo exhibition in 2020 titled

S E A L I F E, showcasing several of her portraiture photography works from the series of the same name, Kiyomi was featured as one of eight emerging female artists in Poimena Gallery’s Unfurl, a show highlighting young women in the Tasmanian art scene.

Having had her works included in many group exhibitions at UTAS’ student-run gallery throughout 2017-2020, Kiyomi became an active member of the Powerhouse Art Committee (later Precinct Art Society) from 2018-2020, regularly curating shows, organizing opening nights and invigilating the gallery.

In 2020 Kiyomi was afforded the opportunity to work with renowned Australian photomedia artist, Anne Zahalka, photographing the Tamar Island Wetlands for reference in the 2020 iteration of her Wild Life series, Lost Landscapes.

Kiyomi was one of forty finalists in the 2020 edition of The Tidal: City of Devonport National Art Prize. Chosen from among 162 entrants, her work was featured in the Devonport Regional Gallery’s finalists’ exhibition, tidal.20. From 2017-2019, Kiyomi was a finalist in the Powerhouse Art Gallery’s annual Art Prize.
